Artists Notes:
While many people see poundnets on the waters of the Bay and its tributaries, few understand what goes into them. It basically costs a waterman $10,000 to create a poundnet. The regulations for fishing one of them are so fractious that making money from just one is next to impossible. This means a good poundnet fisherman has several such operations. Poles need to be cut, net needs to be geared for hedges, hearts and cribs. The poles need to be set, the net hung so the doubts and hoping can begin. The operation needs to survive careless pleasure boaters running through them, storms, winds, moss and hair growths, oxygen depleted waters and plagues of sea nettles. IF, all works out as is planned then there is a chance for the watermen to make some good money. The whole set up needs to be removed before the onset of ice and winter storms. This painting is about the taking up of poles and the offloading of them at the dock.
